A statue of Tora-san, hero of the hugely popular Japanese film series set in Shibamata, stands outside Shibamata Station.
The approach street to Taishakuten temple is lined with traditional food and retail shops, many run by the same families for generations. You can find daruma dolls and freshly grilled isobe dango here, and some shops were sets for the Tora-san films.
This Kyoto-like temple is over 300 years old. A pine tree said to resemble a flying dragon stands in front, and you can pay to enter its garden.
The restored 1920s Taisho-era home of a wealthy merchant, with a Western-style living room, costs only 100 yen to enter. It has a tearoom serving matcha and wagashi overlooking a lovely Japanese garden.
